Our “funding of the month” for our July 2014 round is Foundation Nepal’s Sustainable Livelihoods project, in Humla, Nepal.
Humla is an isolated and very poor area in NW Nepal, with 95% food insecurity in 2008. Foundation Nepal, a small Galway-based NGO, has been working there since 2005, focusing on health care and livelihoods promotion, with a particular emphasis on women and the lowest-caste Dalit population. We have just supported this project (Year 2 of a 3-year programme) with €16,000 – for basic inputs for permaculture, beekeeping, and animal husbandry.
This funding will help hundreds of poor families lift themselves out of grinding poverty, towards a self-sustaining future. Both ElectricAid and Foundation Nepal emphasise a hand-up, rather than a hand-out, form of development.
