Ethiopia Deaf Project – The Ambo Lazarist Deaf School

The Ethiopia Deaf Project has a long-term support relationship with the Ambo Lazarist Deaf School in Ambo, Ethiopia. A series of workshops and needs analysis carried out through the Deaf Community in Ireland resulted to a proposal to build a specialist school for children with hearing difficulties from Grades 5-8. Appreciation of Children’s rights to equality and to education was a significant driver of this project.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

With the help of ElectricAid, the Ethiopia Deaf project had successfully built a new classroom for the Grade 8 students and have enabled them to complete their junior education. They have now employed 5 fully qualified teachers to help and assist students experiencing hearing difficulties and have encouraged many of them to strive higher in education!
