Haven is a small Irish NGO, specialising in community development projects in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. This simple project involved the extension of a water supply to the commune of Gran Sab on Isle a Vache, an extremely poor island off the south coast of Haiti, and the rehabilitation of existing wells in the adjacent commune of Keynober.
Our investment of €6,000 (about the price of a family holiday?) in this project served about 600 people with clean water, and with huge hygiene, health and economic gains – from the saving of the extraordinary amount of time previously devoted to fetching water. Once again, a simple intervention, involving the mobilisation and commitment of the local community, has paid off in spades.
