Christian Aid’s application to ElectricAid was for the re-design and completion of a local irrigation scheme in South Omo, Ethiopia. ElectricAid’s modest contribution of €8,712, together with similar co-funding from the Church of Ireland Bishops’ Appeal, has leveraged the completion of a relatively-large project. Our inputs were for some completion works, tools, and community training. It has been a major success, bringing a previous project investment of c. €350,000 to fruition.
About 200 farm households (1,000 people) in the Bezo and Demeker communities are directly benefitting from this “mini-Shannon Scheme”, producing successfully for themselves and for the market, taking Ethiopia another small step on the road to food sufficiency.
