ElectricAid celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2013.
ElectricAid, and all of our members, friends and supporters, were deeply honoured by President Michael D. Higgins’ opening of our 25th Anniversary Exhibition at the RHA Gallery on Tuesday, 25th September. Welcomed by ESB Chairman, Lochlann Quinn, President Higgins recalled his own time as a “Grade 8” in ESB with fondness and humour, and acknowledged the entire ESB community. He spoke with deep knowledge, conviction, and passion about the Developing World, and of the humanitarian necessity both to act and to question & understand the reasons for global poverty. He honoured our work both at home and abroad.
President Higgins Honours ElectricAid’s 25 Years of Service
ESB Chief Executive Pat O’Doherty underlined the steadfast and continuing commitment of the company to ElectricAid, and pointed to the success of ElectricAid as a great example of real partnership in successful action, in good times and bad.
President Higgins stayed much longer than scheduled, met many ESB, EirGrid and ElectricAid people, and friends from our NGO partners, and enjoyed both the ElectricAid and Sean Keating Exhibitions.
This was one of the highlights of our 25th Anniversary Programme of Events. Our two main themes for the year continue to be to give thanks to you all, and to renew ElectricAid for the next 25 years.
ElectricAid’s 25th Anniversary Service of Thanksgiving proves an inspiring success
The programme of 25th Anniversary events was rounded off by our Inter-Denominational Service of Thanksgiving and Rededication, in St. Stephen’s Church (the Pepper Canister), on Wednesday, 20th February. The beautiful setting, thoughtful and prayerful service, inspiring speakers and superb music all combined to produce a truly uplifting event.
We were able to consider and give thanks for 25 years of service to the poorest of the poor, and to rededicate ourselves for the next quarter-century.
The service was led by Rev. Martin O’Connor (ex-ITS) and by Fr. Kevin Bartley (ex-Payroll), with exquisite music by Patrice O’Connor (Harpist) and Denise Kelly (Vocalist). Kevin Gaughran, one of the founding fathers, and John Kelly, our current Chairman, covered 25 years of successful growth from small beginnings. In John’s words, “Band-Aid has come & gone, but ElectricAid is still with us, and still working”.
The large and appreciative attendance, most of whom stayed for refreshments afterwards, agreed that the whole service was an inspiring and beautiful way to mark our anniversary and to re-dedicate ourselves for the future.
Sincere thanks are due to so many people, but in particular to Niamh O’Neill of HR, BSC, and Patricia Wade of EirGrid, for putting this fantastic event together.
Thanking you all – ElectricAid’s 25th Anniversary Members’ Draw.
This draw was a centrepiece of ElectricAid’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations. We thought of it as a way of saying a simple “thank you” to our 2,600 current members, and to those who have gone before them. The idea was simple – to allow 25 of our members direct €1,000 each of ElectricAid funding to the charitable cause of their choice. We have had great feedback from members, and our 25 winners have been genuinely excited about being able to be of significant service to their chosen charity. Many chose to split their award into two €500 components.
In the current economic climate, it came as no surprise that many of the awards were to charities, local and national, in Ireland. The range was breathtaking – from the welfare of children in Namibia, to the welfare of donkeys in Cork – from a local elder care unit in Cavan, to the global work of Amnesty International; children’s welfare & education in Namibia, and children with dyslexia in Mayo both benefited.
The draw has been a major success, has been very well received by our members and supporters. We thank in particular Peter Brady of Group Internal Audit and Cormac Gordon, formerly of ElectricAid, for their great work on the draw.
The following are just some of the many beneficiaries of our winners’ generosity:
