Nagarhope is a small education-focused NGO in Nepal, with its roots in Lucan, Co. Dublin. They came to ElectricAid strongly referenced and endorsed, and visited us before making any application. Their proposal was simple – the reconstruction of a small village school, Shree Devi PS, Ramechap District. The school was destroyed in the earthquake of 2015. Because it was a small school in a small and remote village, comprised mainly of the marginalised Tamang caste, nothing had been done to rebuild, apart from the villagers’ own building of a temporary structure. Classes continued in that structure, which can only charitably be described as a one-roomed shed.

Modest funding of €7,150 was approved in November 2016. Rebuilding commenced in February 2017, and was largely complete by June. A sturdy 3-roomed school, with separate toilets, now stands – at a total cost of €8,471. Built to the Nepali Government’s new earthquake-proof standards, it is constructed of a lightweight steel frame, reinforced by stonework.

The school, as Nagarhope’s report says, stands as a “pillar of hope”. It also stands as an enduring monument to the outreach and generosity of the ElectricAid community.
