Many of the ElectricAid community will well remember John Mitchell, who has set up a small NGO, the Schools & Health Foundation, which does exactly what it says on the tin. As many of ElectricAid’s founders were associated with the ESBOA, it’s appropriate and pleasing that we should support SHF. John Mitchell writes:
“As a former General Secretary of the ESBOA (now ESU) I’m delighted at the support our little foundation has received from ElectricAid. Along with friends I set up the foundation after I retired to continue building schools and providing clean water and improving health in Africa. After many years in the charity sector I not alone wanted to make a difference but to do things differently. So SHF has no paid employees and we personally cover all travel and administrative costs with 100% of funds raised going to our projects in Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Malawi and Liberia.
Along with the great patriot Thomas Davis we believe in the motto: “Educate that you may be free” ElectricAid helped us build a school in Mange Acre, Sierra Leone and their further funds will help our latest project of a constructing a school in Malokotera, Malawi. A primary school can be built for around €25 000.
Much of the other funds have been raised by school children in transition year who then send representatives to the official openings. The pupils of one school have raised around €250 000 and many of them have gone on to study development education as a result of the life-changing experience in countries where annual income is around €1000 and where literacy may be as little as 25%.”
