A DAM Good Idea in Joykalas, Bangladesh.

Clean and safe water is essential to healthy living. Water is one of our most precious resources. Many developing countries today are struggling to cope with chronic water shortages and the inadequacies of their existing water infrastructure. Basic needs remain unmet and the human right to water and sanitation remains unrealised for billions of people worldwide.

Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) is a charity operating in Bangladesh that “provides high quality services towards unity, peace and development of social and spiritual life for the human community in general and for the disadvantaged and suffering humanity, in particular”. They recognised that Joykalas (densely populated area of Dakkhin Sunamganj Upazila, under Sunamganj District) was suffering as a result of the lack of safe drinking water. Water that was available to people in this area was often contaminated with arsenic and high levels of iron. They devised a scheme which involved building a water treatment facility that would pump 500 litres of water per hour from underground and would be run and managed by a local committee of 9 people.

As is so often the case with these proposals, capital was one of the major problems that DAM faced. In June 2017 ElectricAid received an application from DAM. The ElectricAid Committee met in July 2017, evaluated their application and funding was successfully approved for €8,283.

ElectricAid were delighted to receive a report from DAM recently to say the project has been a great success.  They report that 200 beneficiary households (approx. 1,000 people) are collecting safe drinking water every day. This is expected to increase to 300 plus households in the near future.

What started off as an ambitious dream by DAM was made a reality by the esteemed members of ElectricAid. These philanthropic contributions have given the people of Joykalas a basic human right to access safe drinking water. ElectricAid’s funding is made up of and dependant on unreciprocated generosity from its members and it never fails to amaze us how much is accomplished with their trust.
