ElectricAid, supporting sustainable water conservation in Tanzania
With the impact of climate change being felt worldwide, it’s the world’s most vulnerable that often bear the greatest impact. ElectricAid recently partnered with Charitas Tabora to provide rainwater harvesting capabilities to the Magiri community in Tabora, northwest Tanzania.
Tanzania has two rainy seasons, the “short rainy season “in November and December and the “long rainy season” which peaks during March, April and May. Afternoon tropical downpours are the norm and humidity is high with daily temperatures reach the low-mid 30°s.
The rains are followed by a long dry season lasting throughout June, July, August, September and October when rainfall is scarce. These extremes present significant challenges for local communities who face uncertainty of supply during the dry season. With a donation of €8,000, Charitas Tabora, a long-time partner of ElectricAid installed a 60m3 tank for use by the entire community providing a reliable supply of clean, accessible water. Aside from installation works, Charitas Tabora have also organised and trained a local committee to operate and maintain the tank into the future.
Community based schemes like these are the backbone of ElectricAid projects which make a real and tangible difference to the livelihoods of people around the world. Tabora’s new rainwater harvesting system directly addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals #3 Good Health and Wellbeing and # 6, Clean Water and Sanitation.
