On the 28th of September 2018 , a series of earthquakes hit Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi province, the strongest of which was a 7.4 magnitude. The earthquakes triggered a tsunami striking beaches in Palu and Donggala. Further liquefaction and landslides caused significant damage and loss of life in the affected areas. 2,101 people are known to have died and 4,438 people were seriously injured.
ActionAid with, the support of ElectricAid and various partners were quick to respond to the catastrophe. In a short amount of time, projects were designed to rehome the families impacted by this disaster. Expandable houses were constructed with Electric Aid funding, allowing families a place to recover from the devastating loss.

Mrs. Hajir is one of the beneficiaries of this project. The disaster that occurred changed her life. Her house which was located on the shores of Lake Rano was severely damaged. When the earthquake happened, Mrs. Hajir was at home with her 14 year old daughter who was pregnant. Mrs. Hajir and her daughter evacuated to the football field with other residents. At the time, her husband was away for work and she didn’t know if he was safe until the day after the disaster. Despite all of the downturn, Mrs. Hajir feels grateful that all her family members survived. Mrs. Hajir, along with others, were able to be rehomed as a result of this project. Her husband, even though he was in sick condition, was involved in the developmental process so their house could grow. Mrs. Hajir, with the help of ElectricAid’s support, quickly recovered from the trauma, motivated to fight for her family. As the family backbone, Mrs. Hajir uses her income to support her family, including her daughter and grandchild. This project was able to help others just like Mrs. Hajir, and their families.
This project goes a long way to support the UN’s Sustainable Development goals. This project tackles Poverty (Goal 1), Infrastructure (Goal 9) and Good Health and Well-Being (Goal 3). This project helped life in Sulawesi return to normal in a shorter space of time and locals are incredibly grateful for all the support they received from generous donors.
