2017 turned out to be a weirdly fascinating year. We seemed totally obsessed with Donald Trump, Brexit, Donald Trump, North Korea – and Donald Trump. The world seemed incapable of focusing on so much that mattered, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the East Africa Food tragedy, or the devastating monsoon flooding in South Asia. At least ElectricAid’s members and supporters stepped up to the plate for the latter two issues, committing €76,000 in relief funding to East Africa and €25,000 to South Asia, during the year.
We delivered a year of solid and sustained success, with steady membership (down marginally) and steady income (up marginally). We delivered a staggering total of 153 separate Development & Relief projects, funding them with a total of €1.18 million. Tens of thousands of lives have been touched, transformed, or even saved through this outreach. Much of our work is featured here, and every funding is listed on this site – you know where your money goes with us. Again, we thank all of our members, friends and supporters – we are but a channel of your concern, a conduit of your generosity.
Water seems an appropriate motif for the year. We funded multiple WASH programmes and boreholes all over the Global South. We responded to flooding emergencies – in Donegal and Bangladesh. Our current initiative, the Water Bucket seeks to mobilise some of the domestic water refunds now being received – and to put them to work in delivering critical water projects. Water represents life, hope, and new beginnings, this is how we look forward to 2018, and another year of solidarity and service.
