Our Water Bucket Appeal opened on 08.12.2017. It centred on the Irish Water refunds being received by households all over Ireland in December. It gave our members and supporters the opportunity to direct their refunds to actual and additional WASH (WAter, Sanitation & Hygiene) projects in the Developing World, thereby promoting Sustainable Development Goal 6 – Clean Water & Sanitation for All. Our water refunds can be their pipeline of clean water, health, opportunity, and dignity.
In spite of (or maybe because of …) falling in the busy Christmas season, this modest proposal has hit a nerve, and has got a wonderful response. By the 18th of January, over 180 people have donated a total of €18,500, with more to come. This response will enable at least 3 (we’re aiming now for 4 … ) village-level WASH projects, changing the lives of hundreds of people. Can you think of a better use for these refunds, about which many of us are uneasy?
We have already approved two life-giving WASH projects – a new well in NE Uganda for Aidlink, and the repair of two existing boreholes in Togo for Gorta-Self Help Africa. These are additional WASH projects, benefiting hundreds of people, which would not have been possible without your generosity .We expect to fund another village WASH project in Mozambique shortly. Together, we can do more – for child mortality, community health, education, economic opportunity, and simple human dignity.
The Water Bucket will remain open at least until the end of January- there’s plenty time to fill it again!
