“Leaving Fitzwilliam” Sale for ElectricAid

ESB’s departure (for 4 years) from its much-loved Head Office in Fitzwilliam Street is almost complete.  The last staff will be moving out soon, and the bulldozers will be in shortly after that. In the meantime, the company has very graciously donated a wealth of unrequired items – furniture, fittings, hundreds of framed prints, glassware,Continue reading ““Leaving Fitzwilliam” Sale for ElectricAid”

Caritas Tabora – village-level micro-development in rural Tanzania.

We have had a strong funding relationship with Caritas Tabora since 2012. We were introduced by former ElectricAid stalwart, Des Doherty, whose connection with the area and people go back a lot further, to his time as a volunteer engineer in Tanzania. In that time, ElectricAid has funded 12 micro-development projects for this rural area,Continue reading “Caritas Tabora – village-level micro-development in rural Tanzania.”

Food Crisis in East Africa.

Once again, famine stalks the land in East Africa. There is a gathering and worsening food emergency, originating in a 2-year drought, and made much worse in some countries by vicious armed conflict. Sober estimates put 22 million people at risk, and the deaths have already started, particularly amongst the young, the vulnerable and theContinue reading “Food Crisis in East Africa.”

Alphabet Soup – the strange world of Development Acronyms.

ElectricAid has always been conscious of the off-putting effect of jargon and acronyms. Our Annual Report always includes a jargon-busting acronym-explaining section. (Of course, ESB as a VIU would never use terms like MW, FTE and KPIs – our PDP process would ensure that the EDT never got anything like that from GWM, ESBN or evenContinue reading “Alphabet Soup – the strange world of Development Acronyms.”

Cancers such as Rhetinoblastoma, a cancer of the eye that has a high prevalence in Tanzania, have been brought under control, and survival rates are approaching first-world levels.  Outreach services  are facilitatingContinue reading “Tumaini La Maisha – Their Lives Matter.”

Up in Smoke – our funding of Vita’s stove programme in Eritrea.

Since 2007, ElectricAid has been a strong supporter of Vita’s fuel-efficient stoves programme in Eritrea. Our funding of €83,000 over 6 separate projects has enabled this award-winning programme to reach over 2,500 poor, and very often women-headed households – improving the lives of about 12,500 people. A small Irish NGO, Vita is one of aContinue reading “Up in Smoke – our funding of Vita’s stove programme in Eritrea.”

Hunger in Ethiopia – Back to ElectricAid’s roots.

ElectricAid was founded in 1987 as a reaction to the Ethiopian famine of that time. Twenty-nine years later in 2016 we approved a €20,000 funding of Concern’s emergency nutritional feeding programme for vulnerable women and children in 3 areas of Ethiopia, which had suffered drought and crop failures. So much for progress against poverty andContinue reading “Hunger in Ethiopia – Back to ElectricAid’s roots.”
